Why animated GIFs become a static image in WordPress?

WordPress has made it easy to upload images through its media uploader. While uploading through media uploader, WordPress automatically creates a single image in 3 default sizes (thumbnail, medium and large) and saves original image in full size.

When you upload animated GIFs image, it saves only the first frame of the GIF and displays as a static image when you post it.

Properly Adding Animated GIFs in WordPress

In order to properly add animated GIFs in WordPress, we have listed the steps below:

  1. Edit the post or page where you want to add animated GIFs and click on Add Media button as shown in the figure below:
  2. Now, WordPress media uploader popup should upload. Click on upload files button and select the animate GIF from your files in computer.
  3. After animated GIF is uploaded, select ‘full size’ under the ‘Attachment Display Settings’.
  4. Click on ‘Insert into post’ button and save it.

Now, you should be able to view animated GIF in your WordPress site.

NOTE: Instead of using animated GIFs, you may use Giphypress plugin. Animated GIFs are generally larger in size and use of too many GIF images can slow down your website.

Giphypress plugin may be easier for you to use as it allows you search the Giphy database without leaving WordPress Admin panel.
