Changing Category Base Prefix in WordPress
WordPress by default adds /category/ as a prefix to URLs for all category pages.
For example, if you have a category called ‘News’ then its URL will look like this:
Similarly, WordPress also adds tag prefix to URLs for tag archives.
But still if you want to change your Category Base Prefix. Here it is what you need to do:
Steps: Click on settingsand then on Permalinks. After that scroll down the page where you would be able to see Optional section.
As shown in the picture, you can enter your prefix and can change it according to your necessity.
Setting up Redirects After Changing Category Base Prefix
To setup for Redirects you need to activate the Redirection plugin. After the activation of plugin, you need to follow the following steps:
Steps: Click on tools and then on Redirection
As shown in the picture, scroll down to this page and click on Add new redirection’ section. After that you need to follow the following steps:
Step 1: Add category in the source URL. (check the box next to regular expression)
Step 2: You need to add net category base prefix in the Target URL field.
Step 3: Click on Add Redirection
Note: Now, search engines and users will be redirected to your new category prefix.
Removing The Category Base Prefix in WordPress
Although it is not recommended to change category base prefix, but here is the way how you can do it.
Just Install and activate FV Top Level Categories plugin. This plugin works effectively and remove the category base prefix from category URLs.
